Welfare Rights Officer - two temporary posts to end March 2011

Derbyshire County Council has a well respected and established team of Welfare Rights Officers working throughout the county.
Although based in Adult Care, the Welfare Rights Service advises and supports all Derbyshire residents and undertakes pro-active take up work to contact those in the community who may not know of their entitlement to benefits.
Two full time temporary vacancies (to end of March 2011) have arisen in the busy team covering the southern part of the county.
The work of the team is varied and the successful applicants will be involved in -
- staffing the 'Benefits Helpline';
- providing advice to the public via referrals and at advice sessions;
- undertaking home visits, and depending on experience representing at appeal tribunals.
Advocacy and negotiation skills are essential together with knowledge of social security and tax credit law. Representation skills and experience would be an advantage but are not essential.
A car user allowance is attached to this post but it is possible for the allowance to be converted to other forms of transport where there is a requirement to undertake travel as part of this post.
Due to this post having access to children and/or vulnerable adults, candidates will be required to undertake a Criminal Record Check. The possession of a criminal record will not necessarily prevent an applicant from obtaining this post, as all cases are judged individually according to the nature of the role and information provided.
